Sharing stories together.

Between 1937 and 1938, the Folklore Commission invited children all over the country to interview older friends, neighbours and relatives on a variety of topics. One of those topics was "Local Heroes". Several children then growing up in Ballymahon wrote on this subject. ·
  • Now, in 2008 the children from St. Matthews' National School and the members from the 91 Club used some of these stories as a starting point.
  • One story they read togeter was written by a boy name Harry Flood who was 13 in 1938. He wrote about several different local heroes including two local boys who saved another local boy from drowning.
  • Mai and Eileen recognised the names of the people involved in the story but they had not heard the story before.
  • The members of the 91 Club and the children were both keen to read more stories and find out more about this fascinating resource.
  • They discovered that there were lots of these stories. They are held on film at library headquarters.
Maybe these new stories will be remembered in years to come as well.
